Director’s Statement -
"Farmer’s Tan" is not the product of any single person or entity. Films, although traditionally thought of as individual visions, need to be seen as the collaborative result of many special artistic donations.
Especially in the independent realm, where families open up their homes to cast and crew, where resources are scarce and ingenuity more valuable than technology, where actors dress and drive themselves, where director’s chairs and video villages are but forgotten luxuries, and where money remains second to satisfying that passionate hunger for excellence.
“Farmer’s Tan” was created to prove something to the world. Often, people are laughed at for making sweeping statements of any kind because the cynical and the insecure feel that greatness is beyond a young person’s capacity. But “Farmer’s Tan” was planned and produced by young people, whose passion is anything but underdeveloped.
More importantly, the film was produced with a budget of approximately $3,000. Although still a large sum of money, “Farmer’s Tan,” was filmed at over 25 different locations, with 24 lead/supporting actors, and 97 extra/featured characters.
What this serves to say is that money does not and should not be spent to compensate for lack of ingenuity. Yes, Hollywood does incur many more costs, especially on blockbusters and star-studded ensembles. But what we are out to prove is that these things are not what make a movie memorable.
It’s about the story, and how the filmmakers allow us to relate to that story, not about density of the frame, familiar faces, or sterile CGI environments.
Now before anyone lashes out at this idealized, perhaps naïve outlook on the industry, please remember that Flashbulb Entertainment is a business. We calculate expenses, discuss revenue streams, and realize that profits are what make this wild world go round.
However, we must insist that movies can be both “entertaining and artistic;” that movies can be both marketable and magical, and that the next generation is ready and willing to deliver.
To dreammaking,
Brian Ivie
